YMCA Camp Campbell teaches youth science while encouraging a love and respect for the outdoors. Our experienced staff lead educational activities, classic camp bonding experiences, and nature inspired learning opportunities.

Outdoor Science School

Students in our Camp Campbell Outdoor Science School (CCOSS) have the opportunity to experience nature outside the classroom and participating in a "living" curriculum. Students also participate in traditional camp activities like sing-a-longs, climbing wall, skit nights, arts & crafts, group games, and science-based night hikes.

How is COVID impacting Outdoor Science School?

Camp Campbell is following all current health and safety guidelines as outlined by California Public Health. We are also working closely with schools to meet their specific guidelines and policies.

Can I tour the camp before my child's arrival?

Currently we are limiting visitors due to COVID. Please contact the main office if you are interested in a tour.

My child is at camp can I visit?

Our policy strongly discourages parents from visiting their children while they are in camp. We encourage you to communicate to students via letters addressed like this:

Can students call home?

For the most part, we do not allow calls home. Calls to home make a camper’s adjustment to camp more difficult. Parents may call camp to speak with camp staff about your child’s well-being. We encourage you to communicate with your child via letters addressed like this:

What is the food like at Camp Campbell?

Students and campers report that our food is great. We serve three well-balanced meals daily, including an extensive salad bar during lunch and dinner. Vegetarian, gluten free and/or dairy free alternatives are also avaliable. Our chef and kitchen staff strives to provide a nutritious menu that appeal to children.

How do you handle food allergies?

We strive to accommodate food allergies. However, prior to registering for camp, be sure to contact us at redwoods@ymcasv.org or 831-338-2128 to discuss your specific requirements. If we determine that we can accommodate your and/or your child’s food allergies, our staff and camp chef will work with you develop an appropriate plan. Camp Campbell is a peanut free campus.

Can my child bring their inhaler or epipen?

Yes. Please include information about your child's inhaler or epipen on the Health History Form and ensure it is correctly labeled. 

What Health Care is provided at Camp Campbell?

The care and supervision of students is supported by a Health Supervisor and team who are available at camp 24 hours a day. All program staff are trained to help maintain established heath and safety standards. For example, all staff are first aid and CPR certified, and carry first aid equipment at all times.

Where is the nearest hospital?

Dominican Hospital is in Santa Cruz, CA, which is approximately 15 miles from Camp. Health services and ambulance are approximately 3 miles away.

What does my child need to pack while at Outdoor Science School?

A more thorough sample packing list is included in the parent guide please make sure to send your child with layers, closed toed shoes and bedding (sleeping bag, pillow etc.). 

Can students bring electronics?

No, camp is a place to develop friendships and enjoy camp activities. Additionally, in our natural outdoor environment, it is difficult to keep electronic equipment safe. For those reasons, be sure to leave you child leaves their cell phone, iPods/MP3 players, pagers, and stereos at home.

Can my child bring a cell phone to Outdoor School?

No, cell phones disrupt the camp experience. Camp is about making new friends and enjoying personal, one-on-one interactions with staff and fellow campers. As such, be sure to leave cell phones at home.
