When is my Y's fitness center opening?

For all YMCA’s in Santa Clara County, we have opened our outdoor pools. We are eagerly awaiting county orders for our next steps in opening our fitness centers and indoor pools.

For San Mateo County Y’s – The county received approval on their attestation to move forward into Stage 3 on June 16th. We opened our pools on June 19th and we will be ready to welcome back our members to Sequoia and Lewis and Joan Platt East Palo Alto Family YMCA on July 1.

What if my local YMCA isn't open yet?

You are welcome and encouraged to visit ANY of our open locations.

When can we expect group exercise classes to restart?

Group exercise classes will be restarting July 11 in our San Mateo County locations (Sequoia YMCA and Lewis and Joan Platt East Palo Alto Family YMCA) Current Santa Clara County orders do not allow for group exercise classes at this time. We will offer group classes as soon as possible.

Why is my favorite class canceled?

We have a temporary reduced schedule, prioritizing popular classes that can be operated safely (social distancing, no equipment, etc.).

Why is my favorite teacher not teaching?

With our reduced schedule we asked a few teachers to come back in this initial phase. More classes and therefore instructors will be brought back during future reopening phases.

Why is there equipment in the gymnasium?

We are utilizing all of our programmable space to create as many opportunties to use the Y as possible.

How has the Y's health protocol changed?

Health Screening: Both staff and members will receive temperature checks before being allowed to start their work shift or enter the facility. We will also ask you five health screening questions when you enter the center.

Face Coverings: Face masks are required at all times, except while in the pool

PPE for All Staff: All staff will be required to wear a face covering and other personal protective equipment.

Contact Free Check-In: Members will be asked to self-scan to allow for limited contact entry.

Designed for Physical Distancing: In areas with members might congregate, signage will remind you of this requirement, and some equipment will be blocked to enforce social distancing.

Frequent cleaning: Our staff team will clean all shared spaces and surfaces after each reservation block.

How can I help the Y keep myself and others healthy?

The Y appreciates your support in the following precautions.

Stay Home if You’re Sick: Stay home if you don’t feel well. The CDC and public health officials encourage seniors and members of vulnerable populations, including those with underlying health conditions, to stay at home.

Be Ready for Temperature Checks: All members will have their temperature taken prior to check in. We will also ask you five health screening questions when you enter the center.

Observe Physical Distance: Please observe social distancing at all times when in our fitness centers. In areas with members might congregate, signage will remind you of this requirement.

Expect Reduced Capacity: To ensure proper physical distancing, our fitness centers will have reduced capacity based on individual room capacity with social distancing. Reservations will be taken for our fitness centers and our group exercise classes. We will continue with our pool reservations.

Face Coverings: Face masks are required at all times, except while actively lap swimming

Can I bring a guest, or use my Nationwide Membership?

Due to limited capacity, the Y is open to local Y members only at this time. Due to the nature of the COVID-19 crisis, Nation-wide membership privileges are temporarily suspended.

How is equipment cleaned?

We are using the cleaning product Virex II, which is on the EPA’s list of disinfectants for use against COVID-19 and wiping down all equipment after each class and on a rotation in the fitness center.

We ask for your help to wipe down the equipment before and after use. When you arrive to use our facilities, you will be given a bottle for your personal use while you are working out. At the end of your workout, you will return the bottle to the welcome desk where we will disinfect and issue to the next member.

We will also be fogging all spaces each evening and mid-day when the facilities are closed.

Should I clean equipment before I use or is that being done for me?

While Y staff is cleaning as often as possible, to ensure your health, we recommend that you clean all equipment before and after you use it.

Can I still do personal training?

Personal training can be requested using the YFit App. Download here.

A team member will contact you shortly to discuss your fitness needs and goals and to get you scheduled with YMCA personal trainer.

Do I get a refund for my personal training sessions I purchased?

All training packages and programs have been extended to an expiration date of December 31, 2020, giving everyone plenty of time to enjoy the service purchased.

When will all equipment be available again?

Although we have fewer machines, we’ve worked hard to ensure you have the same options available to you for exercising. As soon as social distancing guidelines ease and it is safe for us to have all of our equipment back, we will add all our equipment back.

Can we play basketball/volleyball/badminton?

Current public health orders do not allow for pick up games. Since we are unable to effectively clean the basketball hoops, badminton nets, and volleyball nets after each use they will be closed until it is safe to reopen.

Will the rock wall open again?

The rock wall will not be open in the immediate future due to sanitization concerns. It may reopen in the future when it is safe to do so.
