Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Y. Essential in fulfilling our promise to strengthen community, Y volunteers help us innovate to provide relevant responses to the communities’ ever changing needs. They strengthen our leadership by serving on our boards. They build our capacity to serve by leading our annual and capital campaigns. They transform lives by serving as leaders in Y facilities and out in the community.

Each year our YMCAs recognize a select few for their outstanding contributions of time and talent to improve the lives of our youth, adults, families.

Southwest YMCA is honored to recognize Mack Kusumoto for his dedication and service to our Silicon Valley community!

Mack Kusumoto - 2022 Distinguished Service Award

A teacher with passion and commitment, Mack fosters a dedication to karate and the Y. The karate program has grown under his care as he’s coached classes for young people and adults. This year he’s working alongside two more volunteers to offer adult classes two days a week so that members have additional opportunities to participate. In all his classes, Mack shares the Y’s mission and campaigns. He says, “I always ask all my students to donate. If they are in my class they understand the Y’s mission and donate.” As a devoted volunteer, Mack exudes integrity, leadership, and care for his students and community.
