Show up, work hard and do what you love

In Santa Clara County, Mary Baden Hoshiko Haughey is known affectionately as the “Godmother of After School.”

A local, state and national leader in a broad array of areas including after school, Haughey works on county-wide system initiatives to create high-quality programming and expand after school and summer learning programs to bridge the achievement gap in low-income communities.

Hoshiko Haughey is a fixture in the community with 39 years at the YMCA as a professional and volunteer. She also works on a national level with the YMCA of the USA on program development — including program designs and writing training — for after school, summer learning and early learning readiness.

In addition, she advises YMCA CEOs on program quality and strategy pertaining to youth development programming and provides expertise on grant-funded after school and summer learning programs. She also provided leadership for the rollout of the National School Age Child Care Association accreditation standards and process. Hoshiko Haughey was one of the five endorser trainers in the country.

The “godmother” has come a long way since starting as a YMCA day-camp leader and lifeguard and swim instructor.

“I have held 21 different positions in my 39-year career at the YMCA,” she said. “Each position developed my competencies and skills that contribute to my work success today.”

More from Mary:

Growing up, you wanted to be: A police officer that taught in schools

How you unwind: I ride my horse, exercise and read.

What you look for when hiring: I hire for competencies for the position — I can train the job function
