The YMCA of Silicon Valley is committed to strengthening and enriching the development of kids, families, and the community. Through health and fitness, youth programs, family activities, and other resources for people of all ages and abilities, we help build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. Our core values of respect, responsibility, honesty, and caring are at the heart of everything we do.
Learn the Life Skill of Water Safety at the YWe average 10 deaths per day in the U.S. due to drowning. More than one in five fatal drowning victims is a child 14 or younger. For every child who dies from drowning, another four receive emergency care for nonfatal injuries. These are glaring statistics that can be improved by teaching water safety and basic swimming skills to kids at a young age. At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. It is our social responsibility to give back and nurture the potential of every child. We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That's why we offer YSplash—a free program for children from low-income households—where children learn basic swim skills and water safety while building confidence and self-esteem and making positive connections with other children and supportive adults. During spring break, the lives of 50 boys and girls ages 5 to 12 from San Jose's Del Roble Elementary School in the Oak Grove School District were impacted by learning how to swim in YSplash at South Valley Family YMCA. In the beginning, some kids were fearful while others were fearless. By week's end, all were practicing their new skills and swimming happily. At the program's conclusion, the children received colorful ribbons of merit to celebrate their accomplishments. One fifth grader won a drawing for a full session of free swim lessons at the Y. Funding for YSplash was supported through our Annual Giving Campaign and a grant from IBM Volunteer Outreach Council. The grant also provided swim suits, goggles and snacks for the kids. Every day we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that people of all ages and from all backgrounds have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. These partnerships support our cause to strengthen communities through a focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. As smiling parents and very wet children left for the weekend, one grateful mom shared her thoughts about the impact YSplash had on her son, who has Asperger's syndrome. "This whole week has been a blessing," she said. "I am so thankful to the Y not only for this program but for all the blessings they give us." Wrapped in a towel and enjoying his granola snack, her son grinned and nodded in agreement. At the Y, our swim programs build skills, confidence and character. We are a place where kids and adults can learn how to be safe in the water while having fun in a positive healthy environment. YSplash is just one of many swimming programs that we offer at the Y.
