YMCAs to Unite to Form YMCA of Silicon Valley
The Boards of Directors of the YMCA of Santa Clara Valley and the YMCA of the Mid-Peninsula voted September 18, 2008, to combine forces to create the YMCA of Silicon Valley effective January 1, 2009. Kathy Riggins will be CEO of the new organization. Richard Lowenthal, CEO and co-founder of Coulomb Technologies, will serve as Chairman of the board.
The YMCA of Silicon Valley will serve nearly 190,000 members from communities that span from Gilroy to Redwood City and from the Pacific Coast to the San Francisco Bay, making it one of the 15 largest YMCA associations in the U.S. and the 4th largest nonprofit in Silicon Valley. It will include 10 full-facility locations, a Wellness Center in Mountain View for older adults, and Camp Campbell, a wilderness resident camp in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The YMCA also partners with the City of Morgan Hill to operate health and fitness programs and senior adult programming at the Centennial Recreation Center.
Since 2003, the YMCA of Santa Clara Valley and YMCA of the Mid-Peninsula have been operating under a strategic alliance as a means of leveraging resources, gaining operational efficiencies, and better serving our communities. Now, forming the YMCA of Silicon Valley is a major step toward ensuring that our impact on kids, adults, families and the community will continue to thrive long into the future.
One of the unique and exciting aspects of this union is that it involves two extremely dynamic and vital organizations, with a common set of goals and vision for the future. The combination of strengths and traditions from our two organizations will create one powerhouse for good.
This union will open up tremendous opportunities for us to do more good work in the Silicon Valley community. With economies of scale and greater combined resources, we will be able to reach more people with more programs and services to help children thrive and help build healthier kids, families, and communities.
This unity will enable us to be more innovative, to create and launch new programs, improve facilities, and offer more benefits to our members. We will expand our base of volunteers, donors and partners, enabling us to positively impact more children and families, especially in under-served communities.
Our focus will remain on connecting with our members and the community. We will continue to strive to create extraordinary experiences that exceed your expectations. We have an exciting future ahead of us, and we are well positioned to make even greater contributions to the community that we serve.
