Swimming

The YMCA has been America's leading swim instructor for more than 100 years. But our aquatics programs extend beyond instruction. We also provide recreational, competitive and specialty aquatics programs for all ages and abilities, including parent-child classes, water exercise and therapy, water safety and rescue, and water sports. Programs and classes vary by location.

Like all Y programs, swim, sports and play is open to all with financial assistance available.


Swim Lessons

YMCA Swim Lessons provide developmental experiences that help participants build internal strength and positive values that guide their choices and decisions, all while having fun in the water! Both youth and adults gain a tremendous sense of self-worth when they learn to swim and improve aquatic skills. Water is a relaxing environment for effective exercise, physical therapy, skill development, stress release, and family fun. YMCA swim lessons include five components: personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, games and fun, and water rescue. We teach in a progressive way using positive reinforcement and incorporating our four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. At the end of each session, swimmers receive a progress report that indicates the skills they have learned and the appropriate level for the following session.

We offer classes for:

  • Parent/child: 6 - 36 months (currently not offered Winter 2017)
  • Preschooler: 3 - 5 years
  • Youth: 6 - 12 years
  • Adults: 13 and up

->Parent/Child

(Ages 6-36 months) Our Parent/Child classes are 30 minutes long.

LEVEL A : WATER DISCOVERY
Introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment. Children and parents learn basic water skills and have fun playing with toys and flotation devices. Ratio 1:6.
Prerequisite: Ages 6 months - 16 months

LEVEL B: WATER EXPLORATION
Focuses on water safety. Parents work with their children on body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and aquatic skills. Ratio 1:6.
Prerequisite: Ages 16 months - 36 month

->Preschool Levels

(Ages 3-5 years) All classes are 30 minutes long

LEVEL 1: WATER ACCLIMATION
Learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Build water confidence for future swimming skills. Ratio 1:4
Prerequisite: Beginner

LEVEL 2: WATER MOVEMENT
Teaches control, ability to change directions, and forward movement. Learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Ratio 1:4
Prerequisite: Able to float and comfortable putting face in water.

LEVEL 3: WATER STAMINA
Swim to safety from a longer distance. Introduces rhythmic breathing and proper arm and leg action. Prerequisite: Able to swim free and backstroke over short distances. Ratio 1:4

LEVEL 4: STROKE INTRODUCTION
Develops front crawl and back crawl techniques. Learn breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Reinforce water safety. Prerequisite: Able to swim 10 yards and to the bottom of the pool independently. Ratio 1:6

->Youth Levels

(Ages 6-12 years) All classes are 30 minutes long

LEVEL 1 & 2: WATER ACCLIMATION AND MOVEMENT
Learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Focus on water adjustment and developing independent basic arm and kicking movements, and front and back floats. Ratio 1:4. Prerequisite: Beginner

LEVEL 3: WATER STAMINA
Swim to safety from a longer distance. Introduces rhythmic breathing and proper arm and leg action. Ratio 1:4. Prerequisite: Able to swim free and backstroke over short distances.

LEVEL 4: STROKE INTRODUCTION
Develops front crawl and back crawl techniques. Learn breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Reinforce water safety. Ratio 1:6. Prerequisite: Able to swim 10 yards and to the bottom of the pool independently.

LEVEL 5: STROKE DEVELOPMENT
Learn all major competitive strokes. Introduction to treading water and sidestroke. Ratio 1:6. Prerequisite: Able to swim 15 yards in four strokes: free
style, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly kick.

LEVEL 6: STROKE MECHANICS
Develops stroke techniques on all major competitive styles. Learn about competitive swimming. Discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle. 1:6 Ratio. Prerequisite: Able to swim 25 yards in freestyle with sidebreathing, backstroke, breaststroke kick, side stroke and 15 yard butterfly. Swimmer must be able to perform a kneeling dive into the deep end.

->Adult Group Lessons

(Ages 13+)

LEVEL 1 & 2: WATER ACCLIMATION AND MOVEMENT
Focuses on water adjustment and developing independent basic arm and kicking movements, and front and back floats. 1:4 Ratio. Prerequisite: Beginner

LEVEL 3 & 4: WATER STAMINA AND STROKE INTRODUCTION
Develops front crawl and back crawl techniques. Learn breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Reinforce water safety. 1:6 Ratio. Prerequisite: Able to swim free and backstroke over short distances.

LEVEL 5 & 6: STROKE DEVELOPMENT AND MECHANICS
 Develops stroke techniques on all major competitive styles. Learn about competitive swimming. Discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle. 1:6 Ratio. Prerequisite: Able to swim 15 yards in four strokes: free style, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly kick.

->Private Lessons for Youth and Adults (Not offered Winter session 2017)

Private Lessons Classes are 30 minutes in length. These classes are for children 4 to 14 years old who need extra attention or have special needs, or for adults (15 an older) that prefer individual instruction.

 

->Swim Team

(Ages 6-17 years) This program emphasizes stroke technique, endurance, stroke development and fun. Participation in local YMCA swim meets is optional. Class is one hour in length.
