SwimmingSwim, Sports & Play

The YMCA has been America's leading swim instructor for more than 100 years. But our aquatics programs extend beyond instruction. We also provide recreational, competitive and specialty aquatics programs for all ages and abilities, including parent-child classes, water exercise and therapy, water safety and rescue, and water sports. Programs and classes vary by location.

Like all Y programs, swimming lessons are open to all with financial assistance available.

Swim Lessons

The YMCA is committed to help swimmers develop the whole person in spirit, mind, and body. During our session, swimmers learn to swim, improve on swimming skills, learn water safety, build relationships with others, and have fun. Our session includes five components – personal growth, personal safety, rescue skills, stroke development, and fun and games. These five components build confidence in each individual swimmer, inside the water and out.

->Youth Swim Lesson

(3-13 Years) The beginning classes provide a child’s first experience in the pool without parents. Children learn the basic building blocks of swimming and are exposed to pool safety and personal flotation devices. The intermediate and advanced level classes focus on strokgth: 40 min.

->Parent/Child

(6-36 months) In these classes, parents help children build confidence in the water as they become aware of the difference between moving through water and movements on dry land. Children also have fun with age-appropriate games that use basic water movements such as kicking and breathing. This class is not designed to teach babies to swim, but rather to introduce them to the aquatic environment and provide a special fun time for adults and infants to interact. Classes are 30 minutes long.

 

 

 

->Adult Swim Lessons

(Ages 14 and up) Adult lessons offer a supportive class environment with an emphasis on skill development, safety, and form. Beginning and intermediate instruction is offered. Classes are 40 minutes long.

->Masters Swimming

(Ages 14 and up) Our free Masters Swim program is designed for members who would like to improve on endurance and stroke technique in a structured exercise program. Masters Swimming is open to all members 14 and up (fitness, triathlete, competitive, non-competitive) who are looking for healthy living support in a welcoming environment.

Aquatics Programs

->Water Polo Club

(Ages 8-15) Water Polo Club is a program designed for youth who are interested in participating in a water polo program. Students are taught by current high school and collegiate level water polo players and students will learn the fundamentals of water polo as well as participate in organized scrimmages. This is a great way for youth to be introduced to the sport, learn the basics, and build confidence.

->Pirates Swim Team

The Central YMCA Pirates participate in the YMCA Bay Area Swim Team League, a noncompetitive league that focuses on individual performance as well as teamwork. Young swimmers ages 6-17 will have fun and enjoy the satisfaction that comes from dedication and discipline.

->Aqua Aerobics

We offer a variety of aqua aerobics classes designed to keep you active and healthy. These classes are particularly valuable for those looking for low-impact aerobic workouts.

Aquatic Program Policies

REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY: The Y will honor all refund requests made at least one day prior to the start of the session. Refund requests made on the start date of the session or later are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Credits or refunds will not be issued for Private Swim Lessons.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Central YMCA is a nonprofit organization. Membership and programs are open to everyone. Financial assistance is available. To apply, pick up a confidential application at our member services desk or download one online.

POOL CLOSURES: Credits and refunds cannot be issued due to unforeseen circumstances, including weather conditions that result in pool closures. We will make every attempt to accommodate for the lesson.

PARENTAL SUPERVISION: Children seven and under must have a parent present on the pool deck while swim lessons are in progress.

PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOTAPING: YMCA staff are the only authorized photographers on the pool deck and will only photograph swim lessons on the first and last day of the session. Videotaping is not allowed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A parent/guardian must accompany children and present a valid membership card/ID when entering the YMCA. Swim lesson viewing passes are available for your guests. Ask us for details. As a courtesy to allparticipants, students who arrive 15 minutes after the class start time will be unable to join the class. Swimmers who are not potty-trained must wear plastic swim diapers.
