YMCA Provides Healthy Meals and Enriching Summer Camps for Children
In the tradition of responding to community needs, YMCA of Silicon Valley is pleased to provide free or low-cost Summer Food and Recreation Camps for 1,300 children of low-income families who qualify throughout Santa Clara County. Camps will be held in 13 communities spanning from Morgan Hill to Mountain View from June through August.
The camps are funded by Santa Clara County through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s Emergency Contingency Funds for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
The full-day YMCA Summer Food and Recreation Camps for children ages 5 to 12 include activities such as swimming, sports, games, arts and crafts, plus educational enrichment. The half-day kinder-readiness camps for children entering kindergarten in the fall include fun activities and follow a curriculum exploring shapes, colors, letters and numbers. Both camps serve healthy meals and snacks.
“We are so excited to provide these camps at little or no cost for families who are struggling to put food on their tables and afford summer camp for their kids,” said Mary Hoshiko Haughey, vice president of Program and Community Development for YMCA of Silicon Valley. “As a result, we are further expanding our cause as the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.”
