Our executive leaders are at the forefront of the YMCA of Silicon Valley delivering on its mission. They foster an environment of inclusiveness within our organization and throughout the community through our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Here are the men and women who are leading the YMCA into the future:

Sandy Walker
President & Chief Executive Officer

Sandy became the YMCA of Silicon Valley President and Chief Executive Officer on November 7, 2016, following the retirement of the previous CEO.

Prior to this position, Sandy served as President and CEO of YMCA of Greater Cincinnati for 11 years. She expanded programs for early learning, child care and academic enrichment, recognizing that a strong foundation helps children thrive and realize their full potential. She worked to raise funds and oversee major capital improvements, including the renovation of a large YMCA health and wellness facility and the expansion of a Y resident camp.

Throughout her 30 year Y career, working at YMCA’s in Boston, Philadelphia and Washington D.C., she has demonstrated a deep commitment to improving the quality of life for children, adults and families – a passion and dedication that she now continues in Silicon Valley.

Tom Nelson
Chief Operations Officer

Tom joined the YMCA of Silicon Valley as Chief Operating Officer in November 2017, and brings over 25 years of experience in the wellness, fitness and recreation industry. 

Previous to joining the YMCA, Tom has held leadership roles with top national and international health and fitness management companies overseeing the operations of non-profit community centers, commercial fitness clubs, medically integrated fitness centers, and corporate wellness programs. In addition to supporting the operational performance of nearly 100 organizations nationwide, he has contributed locally as a volunteer board member and co-founder for organizations supporting the wellness needs of our local Bay Area communities. Tom is a native of Silicon Valley and earned his BS and MA degrees from San Jose State University.

Tony Ganger
Chief Development Officer

Tony joined the YMCA of Silicon Valley as Chief Development Officer in June 2013. He has more than 20 years of experience within the YMCA as well as development experience at UC Berkeley. Most recently, Tony served as the Senior Director of Foundation Relations at YMCA of the USA, the national offices of the YMCA. Tony has made a career of the Y because he feels the organization has the power and opportunity to effect positive change in the lives of its participants and make a significant impact on communities.

Judy Hayner
Executive Vice President, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer

With more than 20 years of strategic marketing experience, Judy is responsible for leading and managing our process of innovation – identifying and developing creative new strategies, opportunities and ideas to further the mission of the Y. She also leads all marketing and communications initiatives for our association. Prior to joining the Y, Judy managed worldwide marketing for Hewlett-Packard’s $1 billion service business, developing and introducing services that generated profitable new growth of $200 million per year. She later joined the HP Leadership and Development team creating comprehensive leadership development programs for the highest level HP executives.

Ira Holtzman
Chief Financial Officer

Ira brings 20 years of CFO experience in the not-for-profit sector serving with the Health Trust based in San Jose. In his role, he developed and delivered CFO support and counsel to over 80 not-for-profit organizations throughout California. Prior to joining the Health Trust, he spent 17 years at Good Samaritan Health System and Lockheed Corporation. Ira is a well-respected leader, coach and educator in finance and strategic leadership known for his guidance with boards, executives, and government entities throughout Silicon Valley.

Karla Jessup
Chief Human Resources Officer

Karla joined the YMCA of Silicon Valley Human Resources team in 2016 following 13 years at YMCA of the Triangle in Raleigh, North Carolina. She has 20+ years of diverse human resources and management experience that spans for profit to non-profit. She has extensive hands-on experience leading HR initiatives including policy design, compensation, performance management, recruiting, compliance reporting, HRIS implementations, HR workflow development, and benefits administration.

Karla earned her Bachelor of Business Administration from Campbell University. She has also a certified Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and is a certified SHRM-Certified Professional (SHRM-CP).

Mary Hoshiko Haughey
Sr. Vice President of Operations

Mary has 37 years of experience as a Y professional and volunteer. She currently oversees operations of several branches, the Youth Development team, and YMCA Project Cornerstone. She works collaboratively with school districts, funders, cities, counties, non-profits and businesses to create programs to meet the needs of our community. Mary serves as a national leader for the YMCA movement in expanded learning programs and youth health and wellness. She has led several Y-USA program initiatives, most recently, as writer and trainer for the new Y-USA Achievement Gap Signature programs. Mary is passionate about the programmatic magic in the intersection between youth development, education and healthy living creating impact for all members of our community.

Simon Chiu
Vice President of Financial Development

Simon joined the Y in June of 2018 and brings 23 years of experience as a school leader and fundraiser.

He began his career in education as a high school English teacher before transitioning to school leadership roles. He has served as an Assistant Principal and a Principal at various Bay Area Catholic schools. Most recently, as President of Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, where he led strategic planning and fundraising strategies that led to growth in giving every year.

Simon earned his BA from Santa Clara University and MA from San Francisco State University. He is passionate about working for a mission-based organization like the Y and building relationships with people who are committed to making an impact in their local community.

David Fisch
Vice President of Property

Dave has 15 years of project management experience. During his 11 years with the Y, he has led and managed countless major projects including the YMCA Camp Campbell transformation and a 17 million construction and renovation project for East Palo Alto. Prior to joining the Y, Dave served in project management capacities for the International School of the Peninsula and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

Sujan Vatturi
Vice President of Information Services & Technology

Sujan brings 25 years of Information Technology experience and is responsible for leading the technology transformation at the Y.

Prior to joining YMCA of Silicon Valley, Sujan held senior leadership roles, in several large multi-national and startup organizations in the Bay Area, focused on IT business applications, networks, security and compliance in the Contact Center and Software industries. He is passionate about architecting solutions, driving efficiencies, delivering quality services, managing by metrics and spearheading change, utilizing employee and customer centric focused management philosophies based on the Y's core values.
